Matt,

We don't have a local Hobie dealer here in Va Beach, so I went through our local Murray's dealer to get a new sail for my 14. I wanted a "Misty" pattern and I asked if they could put a special number on the sail (my birthday, 52368). The response was that they had to make a sail since they didn't have any on the shelf and adding my own number would make it a custom sail, which would add $200 to the price! They also said it would take 3 weeks. It doesn't make sense that if they have to make one anyway-- what is the big deal with requesting a number??

I just want a new sail to show off to those Iowa boys!!

You should stick with what works. 420.

Order from an authorized dealer. Backyard Boats in Alexandria whould be a good choice.

The cost for sail numbers is a $50 handling fee to a dealer. With reasonable markup... it wouldn't be $200. I suspect that since Murrays can not purchase sails from us, they get through a dealer and then sell to another "dealer" that there is some additional adding-on going on here. They may also just assume that the special numbers are making it a special order sail price, but custom sails are only $136.00 more than standard on the price list.

We put numbers on each sail, so non are "on the shelf" ready for custom numbers. We have to build them.

Well, that explains a lot--Thanks. I'll put an order in shortly, but I may get mey other 'Spicoli' sail back. Chris missed that one at the last NAs--would have gone well with the 420 theme....

420's...lol...I hate them, biggest dog of a boat (even if they are only 3 months old). Dan, did you ever rig a spin on one of your 14's? I've been thinking about doing it for some amazing off the wind performance....a new mainsail would help but they are EXPENSIVE!

Sam,

the 420 thing has nothing to do with the boat--it is a special number, so to say.

I didn't get spinnakers on a 14, but I did get a Hooter sail. I also got a new square top main from whirlwind sails and they are very reasonable. They are super nice in big wind, but not as good as the dacron in the light stuff.

I have a complete Hooter set-up that I am selling if you want to convert your boat--I'm talking pole, hardly sail, lines, furler and all other hardware. Everything has low hours on it, I think the sail was used maybe 10 times. $800 is a great price for all that stuff.
