Post subject:  Mast Rotation

Hi all, I have a question about my mast on my H16. For some reason the stoppers fail to meet when the mast rotates. Last weekend this wasn't happening, but yesterday when I was sailing the mast kept overrotating because the stoppers were not meeting. I didn't do anything different with my rigging from last weekend and the mast stayed up all week.

I took the mast down today and tried new chips and different rakes but nothing I do will make the stoppers meet. What can I do, or does this eventually happen to older Hobies??!?!?

Any advice is much appreciated...

try tightening your jib halyard more. This will bring the mast more forward and bring the stops closer together.

Post subject:  Stops

Perhaps the stops are just too worn. The chip is too thick? The post is pushing up through the step (should be flush with the bottom radius of the cup)?

The new step castings and mast bases have taller and wider stops for this issue.

I think the stops must be too worn. This is odd though, because when we sailed it last week we didn't have this problem and now they really aren't even very close to connecting.

We did try to tighten the jib halyard but that didn't work. Also, the chip isn't the problem because we even put the mast up once without the chip just to see if it would work...no luck.

I guess this thread is in the wrong forum, but this problem reminds me that my H14 started doing the same thing last fall right before it went to storage. I'm currently refurbishing the hulls but hopefully next weekend I'll be able to set it up and see if I can figure it out.

Does anyone know about how much new mast steps run and where to get them?

Thanks for the help.

Post subject:  Parts

The stops missing completely would be strange. They are most likely to be beveled off at 45 degrees and ride up over each other. That was typical of the older ones. The new step and base is a much better fit.

Check our dealer finder for the closest authorized dealer.

From the catalog the H16 parts are:

#20640011 Mast Base (H16) $47.30
#20200011 Mast Step (Same for 16 and 14 Turbo) $82.00

The new stops are a much better fit; however, these are even wearing down a little after only a few sailing sessions. I reconmend filing down your current stops and getting the new mast rotation kit to prevent the stops from ever actually being used.
