Post subject:  HELP ME WITH #####'S

I can't find the hull numbers on my 14T, the only numbers on the entire boat is on the forward pylon. It says 242, I am not sure if this is even signifigant but there are no and never have been any on the back of the hulls.

Please, my six month grace period to get it registered has ended or is very close to ending and I need to get my boat registered. Without the numbers I am up a creek, or as most of us think, windless.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

i do not think it will matter in the long run if you just give them some kind of answer.
if its not on the sterns between the gudgeons (nd you might need to lightly sand and see if something starts appearing, then it should be etched into the pylons. but there should be much more than 242. if 242 looks like it may be the remains, as in the rest got rbbed off, then just register it under something random. the serial i had was CCM487610673 which didnt match any of the serial numbering trends... so you could do whatever.

i dunno, just a random idea.

good luck

Serial number?

The number on the forward post is 242? Before 1973 the numbers were on the outside of each forward post. That would be a really old 14. Maybe 1968 or 69?

Okay, I have trouble believing that my boat is that old but I just checked again and stamped there is the # 242. It is on the outside and does not appear to be worn or anything. I thought that maybe there would be another # in front of the 242 but nope, there it is. I have looked it over carefully and there has not been anything rubbing there so I know that nothing has been rubbed off.

If this boat really is as old as it could be it is in amazing shape. No soft spots and nto water logged or anything. I know the sails are not original because I replaced them and the old ones were full of holes and have been thrown away so I do not know the sail #'s. The person I bought it from said he thought it was a mid 80's boat. It had been in a garage for at least 10 years when I bought it for $350 dollars for the trailor and all and he even payed for half of the new sails to help me get sailing.

I do not know what to think about my boat being that old, if it is that old is there any way I can find out when it was made?

My post is the best we can do for boats with stamped serial numbers on the forward posts. As stated, my guess is that it is #242 and built in 1968-69.

Thanks for the info, I really wish I could find out more about my boat but that is okay. Does that make it one of the older that is still sailing?

are there any places where two different colors of materials show through?

because if the hulls were sanded and professionally repainted, the etched serial could have been removed. and then that 242 may be from a random writing or alternatively may be from a much older boat, like a 68-69 model, which was parted out and the crossbars found their way to the hulls.

just a thought. good luck

yeah if it really is 242, then aside from prototypes, chronological numbering would lead us to believe that you have one of the oldest boats in use.

No, I got ahold of the guy who owned if before me. I sacrificed the paint on one small part (I am repainting this winter) to scrape of some paint and see if there were more layers. Nope, just one layer of paint. The guy who had it said that he knew nothing about it ever being painted and he knew the guy that had it before him.

I think I just have a very old boat that has some how held up very well. Like I said there are no soft spots or anything else wrong. Just because she is old doesn't mean that I have to be gentle on her, but it does call for a name change. My boat could be nearly forty years old.

Does anyone else know about boat that old that are still sailing?
