I am getting a new to me Hobie Cat 14. I have read that crew weight should not exceed 150 pounds. So I guess that means I cannot have 2 people that are 150+ ? |

150 is the suggested weight for best performance. You can take along a friend at 150 lbs... Just slower and may bury the bows sooner when under load. |

I sail a H14 and weighed 200 lbs last season and had a blast with it. Yes, performance suffered a bit because I was heavy for a 14, but if you are just daysailing, it's still a lot of fun. I towed it down to the Florida panhandle and really enjoyed a week sailing in the surf and sailing several miles up and down the beach. However, I've taken it a couple of steps further - I put a Turbo rig on the 14 last summer and performance significantly improved. At 200 lbs I could fly hulls on the Turbo before the lake began to whitecap. So why, might you ask, have I been writing in the past tense? Over the winter, I've dropped 15 lbs. Now that I'm a bit lighter, I'm anxious to see if I'll notice a difference. I hope to knock my weight down to 175 lbs. My goal is to get off blood pressure medication, but if dropping some weight helps with boat speed, I'll just consider that an extra bonus. |
