I'm trying to get out again to sail my hobie 14, I researched online and they say if you are new to sailing you should only go out at about 5-10 mph winds. Is this true or what is a good wind speed for a beginner like me? |

I am also a beginner but with a Wave not a 14, and 5-10 mph winds is certainly a good place to start on the Wave. There is quite a big difference between the ends of that range, especially if you sail somewhere that is gusty (like the small lake I use). I started with 5-7 mph days and got bored with that after a couple of outings, so now I try to get out when it's 8-10. |

5-10 mph is a good target wind speed for learning. Anything less, and you will have a tough time getting the boat moving and developing a consistent feel for how the boat handles. Anything more and you may find yourself overwhelmed by the speed and power of the boat (i.e., things will start to happen much more quickly). Obviously the wind is never totally consistent, but 5-10 is a good place to start. Different people progress at different rates, so you may find that you quickly feel capable of handling the boat in a stronger breeze. sm |
