| Post subject: | Loose boat what to do? |
Just happened to lift on my tramp frame the other day and noticed the corner lifted a bit on the pylon. I checked and 3 of the 4 corners will lift about 1/4" if I pull straight up. What if anything should I do about this? The boat has been sailing fine but I want to fix it if it will cause trouble later. TIA |

If you can lift the corner casting up on the pylon (with the bolt installed) then most likely the hole in the pylon has ovalzed. Easiest fix would be to carefully drill out the holes and install a larger bolt to eliminate the slop. sm |

Thanks for the reply, Should I tap the frame down tight before drilling? I am wondering if it would make sense to pull the frame, weld the holes up and then drill the holes. Just wondering what the best fix is. |

Yes, make certain the casting is seated firmly on the pylon That's a lot of work to weld the holes shut and re-drill Alternatively, drill them all out to larger size as srm suggested And...If only one corner is "wallered" out why worry? Fix the one and go sailing! |

Check the March/April 2010 issue of the Hotline. There was a This Old Hobie article where someone added backing plates inside the pylons, brazed filler material into the holes, and then re-drilled. If the holes are heavily enlarged/elongated, then that may be required, but if you can take care of the slop by just jumping up one or two bolt sizes, then I would just drill it out and use the larger bolt. You'll probably want to pull the boat apart and look at the pylons before deciding how to fix. sm |

Thanks for the replies. I think I will pull them off 1 side at a time to see what's what and then decide on the right fix. It is actually 3 on mine that move up/down. The good news is the boat held together the other day when I pitch poled at ~ 20mph so it can't be too weak! |

I had this same issue with my '85. 3 out of 4 were able to be lifted 1/4" due to hole wallow. I fixed mine by using 2 thin brass shims on each pylon then beat the castings down with a rubber mallet. Installed the bolts with fresh lock nuts and really tightened them up. No more loose boat. |

How are the brass shims getting along with the aluminum castings and pylons in a salt water environment? |
