Post subject:  How to setup mast

Hello all.

My first cat, an old Hobie 14.

Am looking for the easiest way to setup the mast.

The mast foot has no hing, just a knob, see images. So you cannot fixate the mast to the hole and than just lift it up.

How do i do this with one assistant?

Thanks.

Old-school setup means using old-school techniques.

If you're solo, then the old way to step the mast was to put the boat on the ground, connect the shrouds, and then step up onto the tramp and wedge the mast base into the ground between the hulls. Pick the mast up to vertical and work the mast base back until it's right in front of the front crossbar. Then dead lift the mast straight up and into the cup and connect the forestay.

If you have a helper, you can do a "human link." Slide the mast back so the mast base is right over the step. Then have the helper hold the mast base over/in the step while you raise the mast. Once the mast is up, pin the forestay. A lot of the 14 guys in our area use this technique rather than messing around with a mast link/hinge.

The other option would be to retrofit the boat to use a mast step hinge (basically just drill a couple holes in the step/base and file some excess material off the base).

Don't forget the Teflon disc in the cup the mast rests in.

I have a turbo which is easier. I connect my shrouds, and the jib then stand the mast straight up against the front crossbar. Then lift straight up and drop into the mast pocket. Easy peasy!

Just to point out the mast step system did not my older style step and base.
I found this out the hard way the hook snapped from the mast base :?

I also found dead stepping the mast tough to do.
I reverted to using a tied line but this can be precarious, I had the mast kick up when lowing it and I went arse over tit during the attempt to rescue it. The mast came down and hit the rear cross bar but no damage was done to either since the back of my hand took most the impact.
Then in an effort to resume some cool factor I proceeded to trip over a shroud, no coming back from that ;-)

Decided to convert to the later Hobie Wave Ball mast system since the original base is worn and the rake is not that great.
