Post subject:  Retro fitting H14 with Hobie Wave ball type mast base/step?

Hi,

Is it possible to retrofit a H14 mast with the Hobie Wave (current) ball type mast base and step?
Are the masts the same form extrusion?

I understand that the original Wave mast employed the same base and step as the H14 but uncertain whether the mast form extrusion with the introduction of the ball base and step.

Thanks
SRG

If things get real desperate, you can always make your own fiberglass mast base. I did this when I put a hobie 18 mast to work on my 21 SC after the comp tip failed.

Make a mold, stuff it with glass, inject epoxy into it.

It is definitely possible to do the retrofit. In fact, at one point the class association was looking at making the ball and socket system class legal (althought I believe they ultimately declined to do so). The 14 and Wave mast extrusions are the same, so the mast base would fit. I think the issue might be the mast step though. The wave mast step is not set up for a dolphin striker. So if you if you go that route, and wanted a dolphin striker, it would have to be the wire type with the aluminum post that rivets on (the aftermarket setup). The other option would be to take a Hobie 17 style striker post and modify that for the 14 which would allow you to use the more preferrable rod type dolphin striker.

Thanks for confirming details SRM.

The dolphin striker is not an issue in thais case since this is an aftermarket H14 Turbo with the wire and cast riveted striker as you mentioned in your post, so it looks like I could be good to go.

Shame shipping and duty is so darn expensive to the UK from the US, maybe Brexit may help to solve that ;-)

Thanks again,

I just picked up a dragoon in the states (rare) and it has the 14 style base & step. The newer dragoon’s use the ball. I thought I could use a 17 post and ball and swap the base to a Waves. In fact I just submitted a post asking for 17 post specs.
For you in London, I’d say try and find a dragoon striker post and mast base, it may be easier and fit perfectly. Find two and send me 1

Also, I believe 17 uses a spacer in the front bar so the nuts on the ball post don’t crush the bar. Something to consider.

Keep us posted on your progress and I will do the same

Thank You all for your invaluable suggestions and advice.

I have took the plunge and ordered the Wave mast base and step along with grommet punch set which intend to use while making a new trampoline and other bits and bobs from Murray's figured I would make the weight up to get the best from the ~$60 shipping fees and duty.

Unfortunately the mast base is currently out of stock so waiting on its arrival.
Will keep you all posted on how things go.

Thanks Again! :D
