Post subject:  I just bought a H14 Turbo
So I'm getting into the world of fast catamaraning. I grew up on a sun fish and can get it moving pretty fast, I cant wait to get my new Hobie 14 turbo up on a heel. The same weight, bigger main sail, a Jib and less drag in the water. Oh yeah. :lol:

I'm wondering if I got a good deal or not though. $775 for a hobie with '79 hulls and an '82 frame. Mainsail is in good condition minus a small split by the boom and the jib looks like it was never taken out of the bag (though the rigging would say otherwise). The main sheet rigging is in good condition but the jib rigging is moderate to poor. There are 2 delam spots on the front that I am confident I can fix (they are about 4" in diameter) and the rudders are a little chipped but otherwise in good condition. It comes with a trailor as well.

Also, I'm becoming a speed freak on the lake so any tips on making the boat faster would be appreciated. I had a cuningham on my sunfish that would give a little extra go when tacking upwind.

I got hosed compared to you. I was still happy though. I bought an 83' non-Turbo, Solid hulls, ok main and a semi nice trailer for $1200. I also had to drive 700 miles one way to get it. I bought new rigging, all the turbo stuff, and a comptip shortly after. It got spendy quick.

I'd say you got an ok deal. Most importantly, are you happy with what you paid?

I have about $9.000 in my 1986 rebuilt Hobie 17. I have a 5 year old Pentex squaretop and reacher and a (2001 or so, used 6 times) Hobie mainsail. WE never get back what we put, but we get the satisfaction of enjoying the sport and sailing with ours friends and family and that is PRICELESS!!! That is why I named my boat "Stress Free".

I am very happy with what I paid. I was just wondering how much they where going for in general. This boat was purchased for college. I am going to be attending the University of South Florida and have a place to store it right on Tampa Bay. I'll be 15min away from her so on weekends and days when I'm not bogged with work I will have a way to relieve the stress of college. Oh and over the summer I want to learn how to get it up on one hull and fly the trap so I can take friends out and scare the piss out of them. :twisted:

I'm trying to decide on a name. After I get the hulls back in good condition (no soft spots or de-lams) I am going to paint her with bottom paint and give her a name. I'm thinking Free Bird (like the Lynard Skynard song).

I would love to get a jib made like this or even rig her for a genoa and get this put on it.

Paint one hull red, the other blue and it has a white tramp. Ohh ideas ideas. :D :idea:

I wasn't complaining :D I'm ok with what I spend on my toy addiction. I want a new main, $730. New ruddder castings, $540. Some new kevlar EPOs for the 16 so the White EPO's can go on the 14, $520. Running out of excuses for being a lousy sailor.....priceless. Ahhh, who am I kidding, there's still the weather to blame. I never feel bad about spending money on something I enjoy. I could have found a 14 for less I'm sure, but mine is very nice and it was an impulse purchase so I could race 14 nationals last year in Iowa. I ended up getting sick an chartering my boat anyway :evil:

I liked my 14 Turbo till I gained to much weight. That is why I got the 17. As for gettting to be a better sailor. This a a VERY good deal. I paid the full $150, BUT learned a lot from it. Reafing is one thing, SEEING is better. It will be the best $99 yu spend of the boat. Will cut about three years off learning cover. Watch, then do on the water.

Have fun. I am tryin to learn spinnaker now on my Mystere 4.3 the season.

At least spell Lynyrd Skynyrd correctly. I hear that spelling it incorrectly is grounds for being hung in certain Southern states (ahhhheeemm: Alabama)

9k for a Hobie 17, and you can't afford the Hobie Hotline or class membership prices? Hmm.......

That is a pretty good deal for a 14. You will be flying a hull in no time, it happens fast and really is easier than you think it will be.

Talk about hellacious.

I go to pick up the boat, all is good. I get down the road, all is good. I get on I-75 and do 55, 60 down hill. About halfway through my trip (another 1.5hrs to go) the right bearing decides it hates life and goes kaboom. Kaboom to the point it wouldnt even turn. The tire skids while I slow it down and it ate right through (rough grade on I-75) and I get a flat tire. The trailer pulls to the right then starts to fish tale (not really moving the truck but skidding around behind me, I can lift the trailer and boat all togather by myself). I get that under controll, stop, go to change the tire and pack the hub...nope, the nut is rusted shut so I had to wait for a trailer to get there to lift the hobie and broken trailer on to. The previous owner didnt take care of the hubs at all.

By the way, the rudders came unlocked and dropped tearing the right rudder. So I'm going to atempt to repair it. Otherwise I will have to fine a replacement. Where would be the best place to find an H14 rudder? Are H16,17,18 rudders all the same casting?

Anyway. I'm having a new 41" axle made with bearing buddies rated to handle 2,000lbs. I shouldnt have axle troubles agian for a long while.

hull repair is off to a bad start. My own fault though. I used too much of the wrong MEKP and my resin turned into a lump of plastic before I got the first spotcompletely finished. :x

THe 16,14,17 all use the same rudders, I actually have two extra if you need them. I could sell them to you pretty cheap.
