My '89 H14 project has very enlarged holes in the top of hull where the rudder pins go through the top of the hull on both sides. There doesn't seem to be any bushing at all. The gudgeons are in good solid shape. Were there ever bushings on this years rudder? Any ideas on how to repair this enlarged hole damage? I've ordered new stainless rudder pins to replace the one nylon (flexible) and one fiberglass pin. Does anyone know how to upload pics onto this forum so that the damaged hull holes can be viewed? (not super techy) Thanks in advance |

I don't think that the hole in the fiberglass is intended to bear any load in the rudder system. It's just there to allow access to the rudder pin for installation and removal. I copied the link for the following video at the point where you can see the hole that I believe you are talking about. Thanks Matt! I have been watching a lot of JB's video's for all sorts of work. Very helpful. Had to laugh at the "simple" instructions for pics to be uploaded to this forum. Still working on that... LOL Haven't figured out how to get my IMgur pics to here... |

The gudgeons take all the load. As long as they’re solid and undamaged, I would not be concerned about this. Use a coarse flat and/or round file to clean up the damaged area and remove any fiberglass that may be contacting the rudder casting. Then brush on a small amount of polyester or epoxy resin to seal the exposed fibers. sm |
