I bought an old H14 a few months ago and am fixing it up. I have asked questions in this forum about the most up to date modifications to make it a racer and it is getting close. I have a friend that would like to charter my boat for the NA's this coming year. He is a great sailor and has just returned from Fiji where he and his crew took a bullet in an H16 race against the rest of the world. He is a super person and has dedicated much of his life to the Hobie way of life. The boat I am fixing up now has a new tramp, new comptip, new standing rigging, new trap system, new-new-new. The remainder and maybe most important is a new mainsail. I have been looking at CL and ebay for a sutable used sail. I just sold my 3rd set of H16 sails for $300 and planned to put the money directly to the purchase of a decent sail. Then I get the proposition from my friend. If he charters my boat for $350 for the NA's will I put in the money from my other sails and extra cash to buy a new main for him to use at the NA's? I would be asked not to use the sail until after the NA's. The money starts to add up and up and by now this $500 boat has over $1000 in it pre-new sail. Question: What is a boat with a new sail and new everything worth to be chartered for the NA's? If it wasn't for this sail item I would let him have the boat for this event free of charge. He has taught me so much that I would gladly let him have it. But to buy a new sail just for him it has to be a balanced deal. Anyone have a figure on cost of a charter? J |

$350 is kind of high for a 3-day event. If he's willing to pay it, take the money and run to the dealer with a sail order! He'll be pretty much toast at the NA's without a new-ish sail if he wants to be in the top 5. |

Before you commit to providing this boat, find out how much it weighs. There can be a huge difference with older 14's and I would hate to have your friend roll up with a newly rigged boat, only to find out it's 50lbs over. If you haven't bought it yet, the 6:1 downhaul would be a nice upgrade along with the mast rotation system. Mariner Sails in Dallas, TX was selling a kit that included these two upgrades. Maybe EO2's next. |

$350 is fair, buy the new sail too. And new rigging and some decent rudders. John is right about boat weight, but most of those old bastards are heavy. I did weigh-ins at the 14s 2 years ago and of 34 boats, only ONE was under 250 (and it was the biggest POS of the bunch-Bobcat) and the rest were mostly in the 10-20 over weight. A couple, like mine and Kitsy, were kicking in at nearly 50 over, but even she and I had our rock star moments and found ourselves up front a couple times. BUT, weight is only an issue if you NEVER EVER EVER blow a tack. If you sail perfect, every time every race, then Bill Jeffers, Dan Borg and Matt Bounds lighter boats will edge you out by a nose, otherwise, the weight is not that big a deal. The sail IS a big deal though. Order now, and get that new color they have called 'smoke' red white and grey. Its awesome. |

...and by all that is holy I stand by that claim. Unless he doesn't, which means that I wouldn't. Aris Tsamis is the Hobie dealer @ Mariner and he compiled various packages for the 14 class upgrades, including the downhaul and rotation. |

What we did is figure out all the parts that were needed. It wasn't a kit per se, but got the job done nicely. IIRC, I've done three of them. Two were for Mark and Sheila. Aris is digging out the details as I type. If I were smart, I'd add a "kit" to the website. Brian C |

Bobcat didn't sail the entire regatta and didn't do that well anyway. His boat is light, but its a really old boat with old sails, rigging etc......plus Bob doesn't sail much anymore (one of the original Fleet 10 guys) so he was out of practice. That boat was in NY last summer too. |

No, not Curry. That guy is 'practiced'. He does not make mistakes, and has a light boat to boot. BTW- I understand that Curry's 14 is for sale. I don't know what he wants for it, but whatever he wants: Its worth it. |

I think Hobie offers a kit for down haul and rotator. They call it the Power Pack(Part#2090) I like my old bag of a sail. It gives me a good excuse. If I could lose 40 pounds and it would blow for three days at one of the 14 Nationals and not just Friday I might be able to stay with the hot shots. Wessels: When does the South Beach thing start? I need to start my program early to get ready for the PUR Worlds. |
