Post subject:  Water in mast

Hey Guys,

Installed a comptip this spring and went to take the mast down for the year when I noticed plenty of water in the mast below the comptip.
Just wondering, is it easier to remove the base, drain, replace the base, then seal the mast or drill a hole, drain, seal the hole, seal the rest of the mast?

Thanks,

John

Post subject:  Water in the metal section...

Did you install the plug below the tip? Epoxy the tip in place? Possibly the water is coming in elsewhere, but if the plug was not installed, drill a hole below the joint to drain. Pressurize and check for leaks elsewhere. You can inject a 2 part (floatation) foam into the mast below the tip. This would be a short squirt of foam to create a 1 foot long plug right at the connection. Tip the mast head down and squirt the foam in. Plug the hole with a finger while the foam expands... so it doesn't squirt back at you!

Plug installed, tip epoxy set, water is in the lower part of the mast. I'm thinking, remove the base, find the leak, and re-rivet the base back on. Any thoughts?

Drill out one base rivet and inject air pressure. Soap around the whole lower mast looking for bubbles that would identify a leak.

It is likely that the upper plug slipped out of place or is leaking under pressure of a capsize (turtled?).
