Post subject:  Dislodged Shroud Anchor Plate & Pin on Wave

I was towing my Wave back up the boat ramp when it brushed against a metal post, the port shroud adjuster had hit the post and it was ripped off - complete with its anchor plate, screws and also the pin (from inside the hull). The post was fine, by the way, - naturally! The damage to the hull is confined to the anchor plate site and consists of one neat hole where the anchor plate pin was housed.
I am contemplating filling the hole with adhesive then hammering the pin back in, then re-attaching the plate and adjuster when the bonding has hardened.
Before proceeding I thought I would see if anybody had any previous experience –or maybe I’m the first guy to be that clumsy! Any advice on materials etc would be welcome, plus any other thoughts or ideas. Maybe this alone will be insufficient and additional strengthening needed. All advice will be gratefully received. I have a friend experienced in surf board repairs who has agreed to do the work though I do not think he has worked on polyethylene.

You might consider a backing plate inserted into the hull. More fasteners to spread the shroud loads to the undamaged area of the hull. How about a photo?

These are the pics (I hope) - There is a flap of hull material over the hole that fitted through the centre of the pin
I think extra strenthening is essential - perhaps a second plate inside the hull with both plates screwed on to the pin?

Sorry - have reposted the pics through a different provider - no need to register with these guys!

You can not use the same fitting. I would advise moving the anchor point aft and use through bolts and backing washers / nuts. You will also need to seal the hole. Maybe with a plate with more bolts / washers / nuts and some agressive sealant like 3m 5200. If you made a plate (maybe thin stainless) that covered this hole and allowed placement of the new anchor a few inches aft?

Thanks Matt, I appreciate your help and will certainly follow your advice. My Wave is in Southern Spain and I am flying back out there at the end of the month - taking all the plates, bolts etc to do the fix. Then, winds permitting, do some sailing and test the repair. When I return to UK I will post feedback to help anybody else who suffers this unusual misfortune!

Hasta luego!

UPDATE
I got to Spain on the 1st July and immediately started work on the repair. Peeling back the blue covering on the forward seat revealed an inspection port opening into the hull. Upon opening, I decided the most accessible site for the new shroud anchoring would be about 3.5 inches forward of the old site

The 3 mm steel plate was cut to size 3.5 x 4 (inches) and pre-drilled with two 6 mm holes - using the shroud anchor plate as a template. The hull was similarly drilled. Before inserting the plate into the hull, I squeezed some adhesive onto the side facing the hull to permanently hold it in place. (It’s also a good idea to drill an extra hole in one corner of the plate and attach a lanyard – because if you drop the plate into the hull it’s difficult to recover!) Using two 5mm x 30mm s/s hex-headed setscrews, the shroud anchor plate was bolted to the the hull and backing plate, then tightly secured with s/s washers and Nyloc nuts.

Fortunately the hole left by the old anchor plate pin did not penetrate into the hull. The housing for the pin, which is moulded into the hull wall, was undamaged. With no prospect of water penetration I simply filled the hole with fibreglass filler and after sanding smooth, finished with white marine paint. (I have a stainless steel plate cut ready to use if the repair starts to deteriorate)

A few days later a strong west wind – ‘el Poniente’ – provided a good testing for the new fixing, which held as firm as a rock and with no noticeable change in handling.
