I am restoring a Hobie 16. I have a couple of small blemishes and a big hole to fix then I am going to refinish her entire outide hull surfaces. The question I have is should I use paint or gelcoat? Which has the best? I want a durable finish that will last for years. Any help is appreciated. Maury |

I was talking to a guy last night from a different boat and he is a long time Hobie sailer. He says I should shoot it with Awlgrip or Interlux with catalyst. He says that will last longer than gelcoat. What do you all think of that? |

After careful consideration af all of the input from different sources, I am going to paint with Interlux Brightsides. I am going to buy an professional HVLP turbine sprayer machine and gun, when I have her ready for paint, for what I expect will be an awesome finish. I will post the progress on the boards as I go. I start phase 1 this weekend. I am taking the trailer rails and trailer mast holder off of the old trailer so I can paint them. I will be putting them on a small multi boat trailer that is in better shape. If I get a chance I will then break down the Hobie and put the toons in the garage for drying. Wish me luck! Maury |

Maury, Expect paint (Interlux Brightsides) to last 3 to 5 years. Gelcoat will last infinitely longer, but its a pain to work with. Brightsides is a great product, just make sure you follow the product instructions to the max. Use forced air respiration if you're shooting inside. |
