Post subject:  Hobie 14 mast step on Hobie 16

My Hobie16 mast step was damaged when the clip wasn't disconnected when sailing. It broke off part of the piece that holds the pin to the step on the crossbar. Now a pin won't hold, so it takes 3 people to step the mast. I picked up a mast step from a hobie 14 in good shape, but it isn't theaded for the dolphin post. The holes for the rivets are in a slightly different position also, but the step sits flush on the crossbar as the old one did. I can drill the 3/16 holes easy enough, and I think the rivets must be stainless.

Can I rivet it in and tighten up the dolphin striker and be good to go? If I'm right, the dolphin post only pushes upward to strengthen the crossbar, so it won't pull out of the crossbar. I'm trying to save the hundred bucks a new mast step costs, and I can't find a good used 16 mast step anywhere.

The mast exerts a lot of lateral load on the step casting. You need the post threaded into it for strength I would think.
