Post subject: | leaking pylon fix & loose flotation foam? |
I finally found my mystery leak that was causing my 14 to fill up with water sitting in the backyard. Unfortunately, It had caused a couple of soft spots in the hull, But i just finished the "drill and fill" and installed a 4" port forward of the pylon where the biggest soft spot was. I now have nice hard decks again. I also found a couple of other problems to solve. When I removed the old silicone around the pylons I found that the forward one is open into the hull at the sail track...the foam inside the track was deteriorated from water/mildew. My question is what to use to fill it? I have plenty of epoxy left over, but am worried about getting a good bond because I can't clean it out very well. Then there is the problem of reaching around to the backside of the pylon from my newly installed deck port to keep the epoxy from running straight through. I also have a can of Great Stuff expanding foam. I'm thinking of going that route because it WILL stick to anything. While moving the hull around I hear the flotation foam clunkng around in the hull. Any suggestions on fixing it? |

I have used RTV sealant around the pylons in my old H16. It's flexible, fairly clear and easy to stuff into the sail track. It is also fairly easy to clean up. You may have to reapply every year. The problem with the foam is it tends to hold water. |
