Let me preface this by saying we are intimately familiar with hoist/lock/unlock with an 18 and 20. Just recently we've been experiencing some difficulty locking and unlocking the main. Last weekend my son noticed the very end of the hook, or tip, is not in line, or plane, with the rest of the plate. This tip is angled out at say 15 degrees. Is this normal? Did we somehow bend it? Will cranking on the luff, over time, cause this? |

Hey John! I saw that happen with another guys h20 at Stockton. We tried to get his main hooked for over a half an hour. We then figured out a way to hook the main, it goes like this. We ran a long line about 100 ft through the loop (untied) and I held both loose ends in my hands and then I walked the line way out as he raised the sail and I then pulled or walked the line sideways to engage the hook. I then released one end of the line and pulled the line out. He told me that after time the hook had bent, and he thought it too much tension had caused this. Why don't the h18's and h20's use the system like the h16's. JohnG. |

Well maybe a scaled up version of the 16/14 halyard bead, but that halyard bead is weak. I was just talking to some guy who had his bead rip off of the wire, letting it fall through the catch. And it was a stock Hobie one (really old Im guessing). Anyway, it is weird that they use an entirely different system on the 18 and 20. I know its a larger load, but does it really require an entirely different mechanism? What does the 17 use? |
