Hobie 16 1986 vintage When I open the drain hole on my port hull, small bits of plastic sheeting come out, and sometimes they partially block the flow. I'm guessing it's plastic sheeting used to lay up the initial construction. But, if anyone knows this to be an initial sign of interior delamination, I'd like to hear about it. The hull has no holes that would allow the plastic to have been inserted after original construction. I suppose someone could have stuffed some plastic in through a stanchion, but that doesn't make sense to me. Anyone? |

I've seen that before, and I'm sure it has nothing to do with delam. I could be wrong, but I believe the foam floatation blocks inside the hulls were originally covered in a plastic sheeting which has obviously deteriorated. Other than keeping the drain holes open, that would be the least of my worries on an older boat. If she's otherwise sound, forget about that and sail her hard! |

It is the bag for the foam flotation block inside the hull. It is only needed during the hull manufacturing process to keep the flotation foam from contacting the polyester resin used to build the hull. The bag will deteriorate after many years. Pull as much of it out as you can so it does not trap water inside the hull. The pieces of the bag inside the hull are not a sign of delamination, but if you are unable to fully drain water from the hulls, that could end up causing problems in the future. sm |
