I recently purchased a 1987 Hobie Holder 14, model H1-14, and found the center board pivot hole has cracks. Some of the cracks extend from the hole out to the edge. Can I just force epoxy into the cracks or do I need to cut the damage out and rebuild with fiberglass? Also, should there be a little slop in the pivot hole or should it be snug? I thought about reaming the hole a little and pressing a bronze bushing into place with some west systems epoxy, but that would mean a snugger fit for the pivot pin. Obviously, I'm anxious to get out on the water. Could I do a get-me-by repair that will hold me over until the fall, when a more permanent repair could be made? I have a few good pictures, but haven't yet figured out how to show them. Based on what I see in the pics, I think you need to reinforce with glass fiber. Just filling with epoxy probably won't be strong enough. It looks like the centerboard is pretty seriously cracked. I would grind out the gelcoat and any damaged fiberglass in the area and then wrap the area with new glass. You might want to also fill the hole with thickened epoxy and then drill out a new hole after you've finished your repair. Fixing shouldn't be too involved, but you definitely don't want that hole breaking away on the water since you would likely need a tow home if that happened. sm |
