Post subject: | Help with softspot repair Hobie 16 |
Hi, i just bought a Hobie 16 and i wanted to fix the softspot before taking it on the water. I have some softspot on the top of the hull and it is a bit cracked... I started to drill for the epoxy injection, but after going through the first layer, i didn't feel any resistance and i could push the drill all the way down without turning it... Is it a bigger repair than i tough? what can i do? I'm a bit loss now... i might send it to some professional to fix it... Thanks |

How far did you drill? The first layer (outer fiberglass skin) is only about 1/16” thick. Then there is about 3/8” thick foam and finally another layer of glass which is even thinner than the outer layer. Whenever I do injection, I put a piece of tape on my drill bit about 1/8” from the end so that I don’t drill too deep. After punching through the outer skin, I remove the drill bit from the drill and carefully clean the foam out of each hole by just manually spinning the drill bit through the foam with my fingers, being sure not to drill through the inner glass. Also, you have to make sure you drill in areas that are foam filled and not solid fiberglass. The bottom of the hulls, the areas near the pylons, and the outer perimeter of the decks are solid fiberglass so you don’t want to drill in those areas. sm |
