Post subject:  Hobie 16 front deck repair.

Hello all,

First let me say I've done plenty of glass work for bottom of the hull repair with great results.

I'm a suspecting I already know the answer to this. But we had a bit of an accident today when moving our boat.

I know this is a pretty structural part of the hull I'm wondering what the chances of success are and if anyone has advice on how to start such a repair.

Thanks in advance for any help!

A guy once told me... anything in fiberglass can be repaired. The difference is cost vs weight, so if anything can be repaired... this should be too.

Do you still have the chunk of missing deck?

If so, I would make a fiberglass tab all around the inside of the hull in that area and also reinforce the remaining hull flange with glass mat. Bond the piece of deck back on using epoxy ensuring that you also get epoxy in the joint where the two pieces of deck meet so the cores are bonded. Then feather back the outside of the joint where the two pieces of deck meet and laminate successive layers of glass tape across the seam.

I agree, if I had the top piece, I'd fix it, looks like there's a lot work with. I'd use all epoxy with my glass and not just glass resin. Maybe put the hull upside down so it won't run on final assembly. You can also thicken epoxy to peanut butter consistency to keep it in place.
