Post subject: | Help needed for HC18 crossbar corrosion repair |
Hello, I recently disassembled the crossbars from hulls on my HC18 (for hull repair) and noticed a lot of corrosion under the crossbars, where they touch the hulls. The corrosion is both on the crossbars and on the two fusions at the edges. Can anyone suggest anything (painting or other product) that I could use to remove corrosion and something to put on it to prevent or slow down corrosion, before assembling again the hulls? thank you in advance Stefano |

You can coat the bolts in anti-seize or Tefgel. The inboard brackets can be removed and re-installed with Tefgel on the rivets. That is a big project though because you would need to remove the corner castings. The rear crossbar on my boat was becoming heavily corroded, so I installed a reinforcing plate inside, made from an old section of Hobie 14 mast. That was a pretty big project though, requiring fabricating the plate and modifying the internal crossbar bracket. The easiest thing to do is to make sure that you thoroughly rinse all of the crossbar connection points with fresh water after sailing. I also like to disassemble the entire boat at the end of the season to inspect the condition of the crossbars and store them out of the weather. sm |
