I appear to have water in my comp-tip... As you can imagine this leads me to some capsizing concerns and as such I dare not take my H17 in a full blow! How can I get this out, is it a simple case of unbolting the section, or am I going to have to perform detailed surgery? Please Help anybody, as I'm missing the thrills...

You're sail number isn't 2401? My old boat I drilled a hole in the mast track on both the aluminium mast and the back of the comptip. Drained the water out then plugged both with sealant. this does have the drawback that if you turn turtle the hydrostatic pressure at a water depth of ~ 7m can cause the sealant to fail and the comtip can flood. Having said that I don't know how much free volume there is in a comtip. I don't think I ever managed to get any water out of my old comtip. |

This is an old issue. The fiberglass seal could become less than water tight if it cracked away from the comptip wall with heat/cold, or was too thin. The newer comptips (since 1991ish) have a two part epoxy foam seal that is poured in after the leading edge of the comptip is drilled with about a 3/8th inch hole about 4 inches from the mast head. Then a nice little black plastic cap is placed on this hole to make it look a little cleaner, you can use a little black gelcoat or paint. You can drill a hole either in the top of the casting, or in the front of the comptip about four inches from the top end of the mast (look at a current mast for placement). Either way you will need to drain the mast and let it dry out. Then inject or pour the two part liquid foam into the hole (turkey baster). Tape everything off first, work in an area that you can make a big mess in with good ventilation, and wear eye protection. As this foam expands in a semi closed space, it will go everywhere. If you lower section also leaks, the same type of fix (two part liquid foam) will also work. drill the hole in the front of the mast below the comptip joint by about one foot. Drain, dry, and inject the foam. Pay attentiont to the foams instructions as there is usually a narrow window for temperature and humididty, as well as mixing time. |
