Post subject: | 2001' Getaway Changes to present?? |
Can anyone tell me if there have been any significant changes or improvements from a 01' to an 08' Getaway? Would it be worth buying a newer unit vs. an 01'? I'm looking to purchase an 01' that has seen very little use & has been kept well maintained. Is $4K w/ trailer a good buy with wings & mast stepping gadget? Thanks in advance!! |

$4k sounds like a good deal to me for that package, but depends alot on condition though. How do the tramps look? Sails? Rigging last replaced? I have read on this forum of a few 01's having hull cracking issues. Don't know where exactly this cracking occurred, but, I think it can be observed near the crossbars or near the mold part lines on the problem boats. Something to check out. EDIT: I am not an expert on the Getaway, but I studied up alot on the Get and Wave before finally purchasing one. 2001 was the first year for the Get I believe. I don't think there were many significant changes to present since 01, maybe minor hardware upgrades, and tiller/rudder system which changed in 2005ish to the new e-z lock system. Earlier boats, like the earlier Waves, had the rudder assmeblies from the 17/20. Just a little more maintenace with those (cams, adjustments), both good systems. I looked at lightly used 01 that did not have a trailer, but did have wing seats, and they were asking $3500. The guy got alot of calls for it, but lack of trailer killed alot of the interest in buyers. I came close to buying it myself, but decided against it since buying a trailer would have put me over my budget get at the time. Besides, I decided a Wave was a better fit for now. I was a bit intimidated at the time, but now that I have experience on the Wave, that would not be an issue if I needed to shop for a larger boat. Hope you can get a little more feedback here! |

Jim, Thanks for the reply. I'm going to look at the 01' Getaway tomorrow (Tues.). I've only had pictures to go by at this point. The seller stated he's only used a few times per season & in the last 2 the boat has been stored. In the pictures the sails look in excellent condition as well as the rear tramp. I can't tell from photos about the front tramp. Seems the boat has been covered when not in use, so I hope UV damage has not occured. The trailer looks ok as well, some rust around axel areas but I imagine that is normal on an 01'. I hope I don't waste a 5 hr drive, but am anxious to see & hopefully purchase. I've been doing a lot of reading & the only changes on the 01'-08'Getways seem to be the cooler lids, the rudder system & sail color. Other than that, all basically the same. I'm a craftsman and hopefully will be making improvements & gadgets. One of them will be a motor mount that will not cost $400. ![]() |

Pics are nice, but nothing beats a live inspection. Funny, this sounds like the boat I looked at last summer, the guy used it sparingly and then not at all the last two years. It did not appear this boat was covered though, as the tramp had some signs of uv. This boat is not in Massachusetts or Maine is it? Maybe he got a trailer for it! FWIW, it sounds like this is a good deal. Good luck! |

Inspect the hulls thoroughly for any damage on the 2001 (and any boat for that matter), but especially 2001-2002. |

SCORE!! wow, I purchased yesterday. For an 01', it is in top condition. Not washed since he had it, but it cleaned up looking brand new. Sails & tramps in excellent condition. Can't wait to get it out on the water this weekend. Worth the 5.5hr drive 12 round trip. Thanks for your input Jim & Jeremy |

Thanks, I fell in love with a Hobie 16 my brother had in the 80's when I was a teenager. I've wanted a Hobie ever since, finally pulled the trigger. |

Well done Tobwco, I looked for about 2 years in West Aust to try and find a second hand getaway and after no joy had to fork out a lot of dollars to buy a new one. Hope you are having as much fun as I am! They're a great boat! |

Thanks austsailor, was hoping to get out this weekend but have had a major setback. A broken boom. My boom, I dislocated left shoulder on Friday. Really puts a damper on sailing hopes as I'm in a sling until I can see Orthopedic Doc on the 18th. ![]() Well at least my Getaway cleaned up nice, she'll hopefully be ready to go when I am. |
