| Post subject: | Need a Hobie Getaway Mast |
Does anyone know where I can get a Getaway mast (or a good subsitute), used. Mine is Damaged beyond repair from a storm. Seems like this could be a hard part to find without going OEM, which is really expensive. Let me know if you can help. Thanks. |

Doesn't the 16 have the same x-section as the getaway, you would have to shorten the mast and change the base and some fittings maybe. |

not sure about the hobie 16 mast???? I do have an extra hobie 14 mast, I think they may be he same size as the 16 mast. have an extra base too. The 14 mast is 22' something and the getaway mast is 25' something. so what you're saying is to cut the 14 mast and put the comp. tip on top of it??? in my head that works, if i can cut it. |

It's just aluminum, a skill saw with a fine carbide blade will cut it no problem. You could easily make a jig from some scraps of wood to make sure the cut is straight. |

The hobie 14 mast isn't the same size, however, the hobie 18 is. But only three feet longer. My debate is to either cut the mast down or leave it the way it is and buy at hobie 18 sail (which may be a much easier and less expensive find)..... |

You would have to change all the standing rigging as neither the 18 nor the getaway rigging will fit. I think it would change the entire characteristic of the boat. The center of pressure would move back a bunch, and there may be a problem with getting the tiller balanced. I have thought many times about putting a 16 rig on the getaway to sharpen up the performance of the boat. Might be able to be done but you might spend a lot of time messing around to get everything to fit and the boat to handle well. |

I decided to try this getaway/H18 crossover. The retrofit for the mast was pretty easy and I have a H18 sail, it looks good on the boat. the H18 jib is too wide to work, I'll have to use the getaway jib. we took it out for a test run during some low winds and had to make some small adjustments on tension of the forestay, that was about it. the second trial run was much better and there was much better wind too. so far it seems like it will all work out pretty well. i'm anxious to get it out again and see how it will do with the jib. it may look funny with the main being so much bigger than the getaway. eventually I may get one made for it i'm sure it's going to take a lot more fine tuning. i'll keep you updated if anyone is interested in this crazy saga. |
