| Post subject: | pitch-pole getaway |
OK OK, I am no expert and everyday on the water I am learning something. I just don't understand what I am doing that makes my getaway want to pitch pole or try to, so much. I am told I need to drive it hard to get it to fly a hull, and in good winds I still cannot do that. It maybe my weight of 270, but the boat should be able to fly with two people. I was told today afterwards to adjust my track out a bit and that helped but I did not make the speed I had been. Any tips on what I can do to make it fly and not feel like it is going diving would be cool. Also where does one sit to get an even water line when under way. Oh, the winds were gusting to 15 Knots but steady 10's all day. I did bury it today, but I was able to save it before totalling rolling forward and like a cork it popped back out. |

Move more aft as you dig the bow deeper. Travel the main to flatten... sheet harder for speed. The traveler and mainsheet have to work together. If you are flying too much, travel a little then sheet harder. The boomless main will become full up high and drive the bows down when you sheet out. Choose your course. A higher angle into the wind will reduce pitch pole tendency. Start high and bear off a little to fly a hull. Too far off the wind and you loose power again. Best flying is at about 45 degrees to 90 degrees off the wind. Most pitch poles are probably from 90 to about 135 degrees off the wind. |
