For my last day of the season, I decided to push the boat a little more. The wind was not as strong as usual, only 15 knots. I was gaining speed on a reach, and I am not really sure what happened, may be I caught a wave, but the boat plunged, and the hulls ended up vertical before falling on the side! This happened really fast. Usually when flying a hull, I can slowly see when the boat is about to capsize, and avoid it, but in this case, I was really powerless. Both the crew and I fell on the mast and there was nothing I could do to avoid taking a bath. Now I am ready for a faster boat ! |

Yes, it definitely can,!!! Yesterday I was sailing my getaway with about 20 knots (down here close to Lima, Peru, South America), we were coming in for a gybe, and I don't know exactly how it happened, we must have gone down from the crest of a wave (there was no warning at all), and the boat just stopped, but the rig didn't feel like stopping, so the boat pitchpoled the mast going straight forward. My crew was lucky enough to find a place in the water to land, but I was in the back (which is up after you pitchpole), and I think I must have landed on the mast or somewhere around it, so my knees got a little hurt, one of them getting some cuts and blood. Still hurt a little bit, but the day was definitely worth it. Back to some old saying I heard sometime: If nobody is bleeding, you didn't sail hard enough. Apparently we did sail hard enough.... It certainly can. Two years ago I took it out with a friend in 27 mph winds. I was pushing it on purpose and wanted to see what would happen. We both flew some distance from the boat but were unscathed. It took us about 4 minutes to right the boat in the wind. It was fun but I only recommend it with a crew who can take a beating. |

But... you are not "powerless" to avoid it. Just have to be aware of the bow and chop / waves. You might stuff the bows, but you can recover if you brace yourself to stop from sliding forward and sheet out quickly enough. |

You just figure that out?Still a safer boat pitchpole wise than a h16! Tasmania's only getaway sailor. |
