Post subject: | Winterizing and Covering the Getaway |
Hi All, Sorry to bring up a sore subject but it's time to think of winterizing the Getaway up here in NH. I've taken all the rigging, rudders/helm, blocks, wings, etc. off the boat. All that's left is to cover it. I guess I could take it to the local marina and get it shrink wrapped, but it seems like I could probably figure out a simple wooden frame over the hulls and throw a cover over it. The boat is on a trailer. I was thinking of leaving the mast in the front mast cradle on the trailer and building a frame at the back to support the mast horizontally over the boat. Then just getting the right size tarp, throwing it over the mast/frame/boat and tieing it all up. Any ideas?? Best Regards, Dave in NH |

I just winterized mine for the first time. I removed all the accessories (wings, rudders etc...) and just covered the hulls and tramps with a 12x 16 blue poly tarp. I put two 4' x 8' air pillows on the tramps to bubble up the tarp and keep water from collecting on it. Got the air pillows from a pool supply place (NAMCO should have them) for $14 each. Cheaper and easier than wooden frame. Accessories are stored under the boat and the mast I hung under my deck. |

Hi Keith, Great idea! That wooden frame thing has been causing me to procrastinate! I just want to make sure I don't stretch the tramps with the snow load. Best Regards, Dave |

ATCDave - just read your post about winterizing and wondered how you made out? I bent both sides of a trailer crossbar down to the ground due to the snow load on my 14. Think I've discovered why the tramps come off in the winter! Now I've discovered a freeze crack (old) in the bottom of the mast which must have happened way before I got the boat (and I haven't even sailed it yet). Gotta love the cold weather! |
