Post subject:  I want to buy a used Getaway

Hi. Living in Austin TX, but spend quite a bit of time on the Texas coast. I have been researching boats to get back into sailing and spend more quality time with my two kids (12 and 10). The Getaway looks like the perfect candidate. If you know of a Getaway for sale at a fair price, please let me know.

Previously raced Lasers, Catalina 22's and a Tartan 10 many years ago with my family. However since we will often sail from the beach, it looks like a switch to multihull is in order... Might even try to race after we figure it all out ;)

Thanks. Cynthia

$4K for a 2008 (no trailer, with wings, no trapeze) which was considerably less than most people were asking. Boat is due for delivery in Austin tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes....

If you are buying an older boat (forgot the cutoff date), the dealer informed me that you should plan on spending $600 to upgrade the rudder system. There were two older models for sale on Orca Island (craigslist) for $3500 each (no trailer) not too long ago. Seemed a bit of a stretch to arrange shipping. Also there is a guy selling a 2001 in Mobile area for $4500 (on a trailer with wings) (was my fallback plan if the Miami boat fell through...Seems like an honest seller, and he was very prompt in responding to e-mails.)

I used USHIP.com to coordinate shipping and the shipping cost came in at $1000. (A new trailer was another $1500.) I will also be adding the Mast stepper III and the hobie righting pole which will bring the full cost to about $7000 for a 2008 boat with the desired accessories. (New 2009 model at dealer with same features was estimated at about $11000 plus tax.)

I found no used Getaways for sale in Texas area at a reasonable price.

Cynthia, Congrats on your new Getaway. I bought a 2003 a few years ago
If i remember it was $4500 with trailer, wings, beach wheels. when i saw
it i couldn't resist. i added trapeze lines, single, and ez stepper III. which works great
takes a little practice, once it's set up. i sail alone alot and really like the wings,
got used to them when i had a H 17. I personally prefer original rudders as
long as you maintane them, keep them clean and adjusted good luck, doug

Doug,
Since you sometimes sail solo, I would love to pick your brain. What righting system do you use?

Do you prefer to sail with the trapeze? Also, did you add two trapeze setups as discussed in one of the other threads? If so, how has this worked for you?

Thanks. Cynthia

Cynthia, I've only flipped once, trying to fly a hull in light
winds, sailing instructors, who thought it very funny that
I flipped help me right it. I'm over 200# so I haven't tried a
righting system YET. I rigged up single trapeze, but had to
shorten them because of the wings, which I like alot. then
if picks up I trap off the wings. from that position it seems
easier to play mainsheet than traveller..if you got the sheet
cleated it takes a little practice uncleating quickly.. kind of
snapping sheet downward..good luck..doug
