I sail in the ocean and on rough days the front tramp hits the swells causing alot of resistance. Even breaking through the waves has been a challange. Is there any drawbacks removing the front tramp? With the front spreader bar there, I believe the tramp doesn't offer that much rigidity. I know we might get a lot more spray, but thats the thrill! |

No need for the tramp. It is not used for structure. You can remove it for rough water... and it is a good idea! |

I am replacing the front tramp with spectra netting. It's the same material my friend used for his formual 40 tramp. It's open weave design should allow water and wind to pass through, plus it should be stronger than the $500 tramp that comes stock. I am trying to re-use the sides of the old tramp by adding grommets and then reinserting the bolt rope. My only other idea was sail slides put into the side tracks where the bolt rope used to go. I'll put up pictures when I'm finished. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of grommets Hobie uses on their tramps and/or what sail slides will fit in the side tracks? Anybody know? Also I noticed Matt said the tramp is not structural but what holds the bows togther? Just the main tramp? Or the spreader bar with those two screws? The screws seem to strip out so I guess it must just be the main tramp and the bridle wires, like on a 16? Han |

I thought of trying a bigger weave also, but I don't really use the forward tramp. I like it without the tramp, will keep a lookout on those front bolts. much easier using the cat trax. I bought a hobie 16 tramp with teflon thread from these guys 6 years ago and the tramp was awsome. Looks like they make the front for the getaway but not the back. I've succeeded in making a spectra front tramp for our Getaway. I used the orginal sides of the old tramp and cut out all the old uv damaged mesh in the middle. I installed grommets with a simple grommet kit and laced it up with low stretch trampoline line. It does not bog down in waves at all but still offers another spot to ride or lash gear. It also holds the rig up as the bolts threaded into the plastic of the spreader bar stripped out months ago. I can post pictures if anyone's interested.
