Stoped by a shop this weekend and saw a used getaway..backrests, trap, trailor with box, jib...$6300...great looking boat, guy was telling me that it'll be really easy to pull across the sand solo (sales job)....my conserns are righting it solo and east of pulling it across the sand from water to resting spot..they have a wave too, i do love the simplicity of that (comes with dolly) arrrggghhhh decisions, decisions |

Phil, The beach wheel are nice if the grade isn't too steep. I have to haul my H18 up a steep incline and it is a PITA. I have been working on a "beach winch" that will pull it up for me. Basically it is a winch off of an old trailer that I mounted to a 4x4 post at the top of the beach and I pull the boat up with it. Life is alot easier now. Always work smarter, not harder. |

Hi. The Price seems good. I have a 2004 Getaway and can right it.... but I weigh in at about 260. Its a great boat. I don't know about beach wheels as I load at ramps. It's not as fast as a 16 but we've been up to 18mph on gps. Neville |

I am 185, athletic...with a bag it might not be an issue ( i also windsurf, so using the wind to help right is key)....something about the simplicity of the wave...also, when it really starts to blow, i can solo the wave, where the getaway might have to stay on the beach |

Does the jib on a Getaway furl? Just roll it up and travler the main out some. I think you would tire fast for the Wave. Doug |

yes, a furling jib....getting bored of the wave is a concern, but i dont want to get too much boat where its going to be a pain getting to the water and back up to the beach and righting it....ease of use is key, i've had larger boats,,,,,,pain in the A$$. when i get the itch to sail i want to be able to throw up the sail and go..not spend time looking for people to help me get the boat to the water |

May take you 2-30 minutes more than a Wave, but the fun would make up for it. Jib and bigger sail will be nice BOTH in light air and medium and if it gets to much just roll jib and travel out main. If a choice just between Wave and Getaway. Get the Getaway. Doug |

PHLOCKER, What are your wind conditions? What about seas? In the 15-20 range and rough water the Wave may be a better choice. The Getaway could be a handfull. If it is anything like San Diego and moderate wind (15 and less) and flat water in a protected bay. The Getaway would be ideal. |

I sail on the Peconic Bay here on Long Island (Jamesport-north fork). Its the bay on the eastern end that seperates the North fork of Long Island and the South Fork (Hamptons--see a map) It does start blowing when the afternoon thermals start kicking in from the SW. Seas do get a bit choppy 1-2....winds run 7-16 knots. it is a protected bay, but the fetch builds in the afternoons...let me know your thougts,,,wife is leaning towards the getaway, as i am (dont want to get bored with the wave), but dont want to be overpowered either |

If it helps at all I have soloed the H16 in 15-20 kts and 1-2' seas. The 16 is a whole lot more overpowered than the Getaway. I weighed (at the time) 240 lbs. I did not trap out, however, as I was still not ready to do so solo in such big seas. With the proper sail trim (flat and traveled out) you can depower the rig as needed. You can also furl the jib on the Getaway as needed. Also, the Getaway is a pretty comfortable boat. You may have company/crew more often than you think. |
