Post subject: | Hobie 2002 Hull Cracks -- Repairable? Need new hulls? |
Greetings Matt and Forum Community! I am new to the forum. I own a 2002 Getaway -- in love with the boat. I bought it ~4 years ago from an avid Hobie fanatic. He had told me about some minor cracks in the hulls -- but, had been in touch with Hobie and was told the cracks were cosmetic. I am now getting concerned that the hulls may be failing (but, am hoping I am wrong!). I have attached a couple pictures..... And, if needed I can share some HD pics of the exact spots where the cracks are appearing. I would greatly appreciate any insight on what I should do next....don't worry? repair? Are there any programs to replace (if they are failing) as I am sure I am past warranty? Many thanks! Alfred Some of the pics (I can send more if these are not helpful) |

I have yet to actually see a Getaway hull fail, but the cracks do not look good. We are not talking warranty now as a second owner and 12 years old. As reference... a new hull is $1,350 Are they clear thru and leaking? |

Looks like someone tried to stop the cracks by drilling a hole in the end and that didn't help, the cracks grew past the holes. I would think a repair option might be to get some stainless steel sheet, about 3/32" thick and create some reinforcing straps that run perpendicular to the crack direction that you can place over the cracks. Then drill through the strap and through the hull and thru-bolt or rivet the straps in place (depending on access to the inside of the hull). Obviously this isn't going to be the prettiest repair, but it should help to reinforce the hull. The fact that the cracks are growing leads me to think that hull failure is imminent if left un-repaired. sm |
