Post subject:  Getaway roller furler Jib conversion

Trying to find out if anyone has converted a roller furler jib on the Getaway to a jib setup like on the 16. I keep the boat on the beach and I would like to have both. ha!! I want to take the sail down and put it away with the main.

Anyone know the different in size (square footage wise) of the Getaway jib vs the 16?

Thanks

I don't know how you can really have both on a rigged boat.

I don't think you need a H16 Jib.
I would think removal of the fuller and adding H16 type forstay & bridels with the jib halyard (possibly modify a H16 set assuming its longer) would be a pretty simple modification and allow you to use the Getway jib just like H16 jib and be able to remove it at the end of the day.
I think you can get the little forstay clip/guide that the H16 jib has and add that to the Getaway Jib.

The only way I can think of to keep a fuler and be able to remove the sail would be to mod everything like the H18 set up and get a sail maker to add a zipper luff to the Getaway jib.

I have not done it, but I think you could do it using the same setup for the getaway (forestay and jib), except that at the top the attachment of the forestay is not permanent but done by the means of a Hobie 16 halyard, so you can put it up and down. Of course you'll need a second forestay, just like in the Hobie 16, to keep the mast up when the jib is down.
So the only trick is figuring out the way to way to do the attachments at top and bottom, but I don't think that would be too complicated, and you can have the furler and you could lower everything down. It's not a good idea to not have a furler with the getaway jib, because it will get destroyed is there is good wind when the boat is not being used (it'll flap like crazy).

The H18 has a furling jib setup that could probably be modified to fit the getaway, but you'd likely need to have a custom jib made, and a custom forestay (shorter to allow room for the jib halyard sheave). The space for the jib halyard sheave at the top (below the swivel) will require the jib to be shorter, and the leech of the jib will need to be zippered like a H18 jib.

Unfortunately, that's a lot of work and a lot of money just to be able to remove the jib, and probably not worth all the effort. Still, if you're interested in removing your jib, you should at least take a look at how it's done on an 18. Might give you some ideas!

Why not just get a snorkel for the jib?

This is the better solution, IMO. Don't use the snorkel from Hobie, tho. It has cheap zippers that routinely fail-you need YKK heavy duty zippers for certainty of hoist and return. Once main is down, use main halyard to hoist the snorkel from the bottom. Here's a link to a video of one being used...Sailrite sells a kit to make your own snorkel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPWSmwDmPog You actually don't need a kit, tho. Just buy a heavy duty zipper from any fabric company. A single length of cloth long enough to cover the jib (I'd use Sunbrella for years of use). You may find you have to bring the main halyard under one of the shrouds so it pulls at the correct angle.

Another option is to have your sailmaker add a sacrificial cover onto the foot and leach. That will effectively protect the jib material without having to use a separate cover. The downside of this option is that it slows you down a tiny bit.

I have used a Sunbrella on my Getaway jib for 3 years in the Florida sun; and 5 years for a 21 SC jib. they have both been exposed to the harsh sunlight and show no signs of wear. picture available if you wish.

Aquarius Sailboats in Peewaukee, WI, and eBay both sell better snorkels for the Getaway jib.

But does the OP want to remove the jib, or does he want a battened jib for better performance?
