Post subject: | Can a cracked mast be repaired? |
Yesterday, we were taking down my mast of my 2004 Getaway when the mast got loose from my assistant. The tip with the mast bob hit the ground somewhat hard and the mast cracked. The crack makes the mast a wobbly. In other words, it's not broken off but not safe to sail. Can this damage be repaired or do I need a new mast? The crack is about four feet below the mast tip. The crack: Different angle on the crack: Front of the mast perspective on the crack: Opposite side from the crack: I couldn't get the inline images working but the photo links work. Thanks Jeff |

That is a crack in the comptip (it's made of fiberglass) Most anything can be patched - using polyester glass cloth and resins - see a dealer for help if you're unsure. Even if you do decide to buy a replacement - it's just the top section you'd be replacing, not the entire mast. So it's not as bad as you'd think. Your closest Hobie dealers are: 1 SAILACTION SOUTHAMPTON, NY 11968 1-631-283-8373 2 MEGREW'S BOATS CHARLESTOWN, RI 02813 1-401-322-1150 3 THE BOAT LOCKER BRIDGEPORT, CT 06605 1-203-259-7808 |

Pretty straight forward. Just gotta break the epoxy free from the junction - heat of the aluminum extrusion first then use some force to break the two halves apart (sometimes this requires hooking one end to something solid and the on a trailer hitch on your car) Worse case you'll need to dremel all the old glass fibers out of the junction to install a new one - but you 'should' be able to get the two halves apart with some massaging. |

I repaired my mast but right at the top. so far it's been ok. where your's is would be a little more involved. there is a good fiberglass guy in hampton bays..not remembering his name. I used epoxy resin when i did mine..Sit down when you get the price on a Comptip..do you sail in Tiana? Doug ps I use a Mast Stepper and really like it. |
