Post subject:  mast tip replacement

I cracked the fiberglass section of my mast last year and need to replace it. I'm trying to decide between a new mast or just replacing the tip. I'm concerned that replacing just the fiberglass section may be less stable, though I have no facts. Three questions for you Getaway veterans:
1. if I buy a complete mast, it is still delivered in two pieces so I have to assemble it, correct?
2. is a replacement fiberglass section less safe or stable for any reason?
3. if I buy the fiberglass section, are there any tricks to removing the old fiberglass section?

Thanks!

Jeff

There's no reason a replacement comptip would be any less stable or less safe than the original as long as it's installed properly and there's no damage to the lower aluminum mast section. You'd be wasting a lot of money replacing the entire mast.

Agree that replacing comp tip will work as original if done with care. There is a video in the 20SE or SC posts that shows how easy it comes out.

That being said, I would buy a new mast but all aluminum (or carbon if my pockets are deep that week) so I don't need to fiddle with hook at top. Plenty of mast extrusions for sale used or new. Then again, I do not fear making major modifications to a boat (I repowered my F242 with a 4 foot taller mast for example). Also, I don't worry about lightning or power lines where I sail. For me, boats purchased from manufacturer are meant to be improved upon. Not that there is anything wrong with a Getaway, I just like to fiddle.

If you replace the whole mast, I may be interested in purchasing the lower section of your old mast...
