Post subject:  Is a deformed hull repairable?

I bought a used Getaway at the end of last season. I've finally gotten around to getting it ready to sail and today noticed a problem with the left hull: The place where the "keel" rests on the roller of the trailer has been pushed upwards a few inches and has deformed the hull. Perhaps at some point in its life, it was stored with a lot water in the hull and the extra weight caused the trailer roller to push the keel upwards?? Not sure if that's a sensible explanation.

So,

a) does it really matter, or should I just ignore it?

b) can it be repaired?

I'm far from an expert, and so greatly appreciate any thoughts people might have on this.

Thank you for reading
Carl

Not "repairable", but may smooth itself out over time. The hull should be supported by double rollers and when not... the forward one has a lot of load and can distort over time. There may also be a heat component at work.

I also have a trailer with double rollers, great for launching and retrieving, but not so good for extended strapped-down towing and storing. While in storage I just slide a 1" x 4" x 24" board between each roller, centered on the appropriate keel section and strap down snuggly... Any temporary deformation has reversed over time.

I hope this helps.

I had similar issue with single roller and the cost of 4 double rollers was quite expensive so I opted for bunk boards. 8 ft 2x6 under each hull wrapped in bunk board carpet. Slides just as easily over the bunks as it did on rollers and no more deformation. Mine was not severe and has since reverted back to normal.

It's probably not repairable. BUT, you might get some rebound if you let it sit in the sun for a few days with the boat supported by the rear and front beams on that side.

It may make the boat track funny while sailing to weather. The skeg plus rudder is what provides lateral resistance while going to weather. You'll probably feel less pointing ability when that float is leeward. You'll probably also be slower because of more drag. If you aren't racing, I'd forget it and have fun.

One other thing, the deformation probably wasn't from water in the hulls, it was more likely due to someone being overly worried about strapping it down for transport. Sailors tend to strap things too tightly for plastic boats. Think "snug" not "tight".
