I thought I read this topic previously but can't find it in the search so please forgive me if this has been duplicated. I usually sail in the Chesapeake Bay. Next week we are planning on taking the boat to Emerald Isle in NC. The beachfront house will allow you to store the boat overnight just in front of the dunes. I've never launched in the surf before and am hoping for some tips. Emerald Isle is generally calmer than the more northern Outer Banks. I'm a little worried that the standing rigging won't be able to handle the slam when coming through a wave. Is the Getaway built as strong as the H16? What are your thoughts on removing the front trampoline to let the boat cut through the surf without slamming as much on the way out and to prevent pitchpoling on the way in? Does the boat rely on the tension of the front tramp to provide hull stability? I have a replacement on the front from SLO sails (works great) but definitely a denser tarp that the OEM tarp which would dump water faster. Thanks |

If it's not an open mesh trampoline, I'd remove it. Try to time the waves so that you're not launching directly into a breaking wave. Sail parallel to the waves if you can until you find your opening. Have fun! |

First of all, this was an absolute blast and the most fun we’ve had on our Getaway. Takes a bit of concentration and can be a bit nerve wracking but is well worth it. Launching off the waves on the way out is thrilling. Surfing on the way in dangerous but well worth it. Even caught a 20” Spanish mackerel trolling with a Clark’s Spoon on our last day when the winds were only 5-10 knots. https://www.dropbox.com/s/zrxjlycuha8nzd7/DSC_0669.jpg?dl=0 |
