Post subject:  OUCHIE -- Visa Card Ready!!!!
I received word yesterday from my cottage community that my Getaway went for a tumble when a storm passed through the area last Saturday. No surprise really that the boat flipped...but the trailer as well, must've been a good one!!! Fingers crossed that the mast didn't snap or bend. Will survey the damage when I get back to her on the weekend.

Nice rainbow, eh? :roll:

Before finishing your claim to the insurer, check out your outboard and the motor mount. Good thing about plastic hulls...imagine what this would look like with fiberglass hulls.

Hope you can get everything fixed before the sailing season is over...

Well, if the hulls and crossbars aren't badly damaged then the boat needs a new mast no matter what. So order one and then weigh those options while you're sailing. :)

I guess you need to figure out what the used market is like for complete boats and boat parts in NB. If you can sell your hulls and sails then you might come out ahead on a new-to-you boat.

That's what I was thinking but used Hobies are scarce here. I would have to travel to Ontario or Quebec to snag one. I was offered one yesterday....2008 Getaway with electric motor & trailer for CAD$12,500. I was startled by the price and declined... :o

There's another without a trailer in Montreal, a 2008 for CAD$4900.

A question that came to my mind: Are any of the other Hobie masts compatible with the Getaway? Could you, for example use a 16, 17 or 18 mast? Perhaps cut it down? Or cut it off at the proper height to add a comp tip to it?

I personally have been toying with the idea of a carbon fiber mast for my Getaway. I've located several manufacturers, but haven't called yet, because I figure the price is out of sight. But hey, it's free to ask!

If it is only a mast that is lacking, there are numerous aluminum extrusions available on eBay for not much money. Having replaced masts before on my boats, I can say with authority that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference about the exact shape, just so long as the track is the same diameter so the bolt rope can go through it. Once you get it (and you will have to bring it home on the trailer, I suspect half the cost of the replacement mast is shipping), you will have to remove the bottom mast attachment and move it to the new mast. Then you will have to remove the mast bail from the old and move it to the same height above the bottom as it was on the old (so the shrouds are at the same spot). You then move the bob and sheave to the top--if you buy one longer cut it to the right height. Since this won't be a comptip, you will cleat the halyard at the mast-so you'll need a cleat. If you aren't a "do it yourselfer" you should explore the local rig shops, they might have an extrusion and be willing to make the swaps for you for less than shipping the mast to you in Canada.

You might notice some minor differences in performance, the new mast won't bend exactly like a comptip mast. If I were to guess, I would suspect it won't bend as much so you will have more power available.

Another thought if you have a local rig shop or mast purveyor, your mast might be repairable (I know that doesn't look like it). The shop would cut out the bad section and pop rivet an insert and join the three parts. Many masts are now being shipped around the world that formerly were one piece, but are now assembled on location because the "joinery science" has gotten much better. Once again, though, the mast bend will be slightly different--but I doubt you'd notice much.
