I am considering buying a second hand Getaway. Unfortunately, this one is not fitted with the wings, which are (from my perspective) very expensive (higher price than the boat's itself !). I am thinking about making them myself : are they made with aluminum or stainless steel ?

Should be pretty simple to DIY. Especially if you have a getaway local with wings to copy from. The aluminum pieces will add up to probably about half what the kit costs (and yes, $2K is a lot to spend on a second hand boat worth about the cost of the upgrade). You might save some money by substituting something other than extruded aluminum for the wing bench seats. That being said, I bought my Getaway for 4K and then paid another 2K for the kit...the boat isn't the same without the wings; not that I sat on them much...just used them as a backrest.

Thanks for the answers. Unfortunately, the Getaway is not very popular in France, and not even a single one here in Tahiti ! Could someone be kind enough to send me a sketch with dimensions of the wings, or at least a picture with the dimensions on it ?

This ought to help a bunch. You are going to have to get the right fasteners (SAE not metric) if you want the screws to screw into the existing holes (unless the EU version of the Getaway was made metric). You can size the pipes by measuring the 6" bolt and using that as a scale. The hard part will be the fitting that the seat extrusion fits over...

Can you find some used wings from a 17 or 18 to modify? I've got a Getaway with the factory wings, and I MUCH preferred the wings on my 17. The Getaway is narrow and hard; I did put some padding under the cover that marginally helps. The hammock style wings on my 17 were much more comfortable, felt much more secure when flying a hull, and my wife would lie down in them to sunbathe. I found a used pair of 17 wings, but ended up not buying them to modify; too much other stuff to do to spend the time on them.

Why couldn't you just dismount the board from your wing pipes and insert eyebolts into the hole. Then find or make a hammock of the right length. Sounds more comfortable as a backrest...might sag more than the extrusion, but probably more fun and versatile--be great for camping, up off the water.
