First off, don't worry about the slot size. I know there is a lot of disinformation about how a bermuda rig works, but the size of the slot isn't as critical as good sail shape in both sails. And no, the exhaust of the jib doesn't make the mainsail work better--that's the most common piece of disinformation.
Second, you say the jib luff is flapping (front edge). Since that's the case, you need to increase the halyard tension....oh, yah, no halyard for the jib. SO, while the mast is down you have to shorten the little line connecting the jib head to the swivel. You can also (if you've set up for it) leave a tensioner at the jib tack so you can loosen on light wind days and tension more on bigger wind days.
Finally, very often jib luff issues can be corrected by mainsheet tension (since there's no backstay). You should watch the telltales of the jib and main and, if correctly set up, as you head up the windward telltales should stall in both the jib and mainsail at the same time.
