Post subject:  Torn Main Sail -- Need clothe that holds rope in luff track
Hello.
I live far from any place where I could just go and take my main sail for repair, so I will attempt to do it myself.

It was torn in a way the rope that goes inside the luff track is exposed, but the rope itself and the sail sheet are both fine.

I think all I need to do is re-build the pocket band that holds the rope and saw it to the sail sheet. Actually, I will saw it by hand.

I need help finding that specific clothe. Does anyone know where I could order some? And the proper name to refer to it? Or a sail repair shop that would be willing to sell and ship it to a P.O.Box in Miami?

An upholstery shop could do this.

The material is 6 oz Dacron.

A dealer could order some for you. We sell it by the yard (54" wide)

The boltrope (that's what it is called) often gets torn by sharp edges of the track when entering or exiting the slot-especially when you pull hard and it is pinched or at a bad angle when hoisting. As Matt says, it is simply dacron over a firm rope. Here's a video from Sailrite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGhij79W4QY showing how to do the repair. There are other you tube videos showing similar things. You can also purchase a reasonably inexpensive sewing machine on eBay that can do the job--look for "walking foot industrial". You can also purchase boltrope by the foot to replace the entire boltrope, but you really need a zipper foot on your sewing machine to do it right (and it is a 2-3 hour job since you have to take all the battens and batten pocket hardware off the luff. Finally, you could "finesse" the repair and simply add slides to use in the track instead of a boltrope.
