Two questions regarding the Getaway as I plan to buy a brand new one. - front tramp : is it standard issue or an option ? - mast : I have been told that the upper part of the mast was fiber made, hence lighter and softer to help depowering the main and preventing capsizing. True ? Thank you in advance. |

All of them get a front tramp. Unless it is calm it is a wet ride up front. When it is calm, the front tramp is quite nice. Yes, it is a fiberglass upper. Hobie started using fiberglass mast tips in the 80's. According to the hobie literature everything you said is a benefit of the comp tip. And yet, only Hobie USA boats use them. IMHO hobie adopted the fantastic plastic tips to reduce the risk of dying from hitting powerlines and the rest is just promotional BS. Not to say I would avoid a boat with a comp tip. I just wouldn't expect any benefits other than maybe saving your life one day. |

Article in 1986.... https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os ... story.html "We decided to refit the masts for several reasons," said Doug Campbell, president of Coast Catamaran Corporation, a subsidiary of The Coleman Company that produces Hobie and Holder sailboats. "Number one, there is concern over the growing number of accidents, and even though power lines have to be installed under new guidelines, old ones still exist. Secondly, the court system said we were the leader in the industry, and we had to solve the problem. Third, we came up with a way to solve it." Reading between the lines, Hobie got sued and the judge said to find some way to keep people more safe. If you think it improves performance....I have a bridge to sell. |
