I've sailed H16's for years, and H15's a couple of times.....in Antigua and Cuba. (We're Canadian, so no problems traveling to Cuba, we love it there.) I've also sailed Getaways and Waves, F18's and T's, and my old beloved SX18. The H15 is like a H16, only with a boomless main, with bigger volume symmetrical hulls, and with simpler sail controls. It can carry more weight, it has cross-bars flush with the decks, and is a smooth sailing boat. It is used extensively in Europe as a training and rental boat. The boats in Cuba are set up with teflon rub strips on their skeg keels, so the Rental Guides sail them straight through the surf break up onto the beach. Quite exciting. However, it does not have that 'sports car' feel that a well set-up H16 has. It is faster than a Getaway. The Guides let me helm, but got excited when I tried to fly a hull. The Getaway is a great boat to sail, especially for a family or for social sailing. It is also heavy, at around 400 lbs, compared to a H16 at ~320 lbs. Think of it as an Oldsmobile.....very comfortable, but not as nippy as an Alfa Romeo. |

I think of it as a sail version of a sun tracker party barge. |

Hello, I guess I was not precise enough in my first message. I live in Tahiti and know the H 15 very well, but I have never sailed the Getaway. I am looking for a "leasure" beachcat, with enough buoyancy to carry wife and kids. In Europe, the H15 has been approved with a max payload of 320 kg, while the Getaway has a max payload of 300 kg (but 453 kg in the US). I was wondering whether the Getaway was "safer" than the H15 for family use. Thanks. |

A Hobie Getaway has allot of hull volume and can carry allot of people. 300kg is very conservative. Of course if it is really heavy you don't want the hulls riding really low. And more weight does mean a slow ride. However in moderate conditions I have had 2 families on ours for a very leisurely cruise! (Four parents, four kids - (6-9 yrs old)) - this was probably close to 400kg. We were riding pretty low though! Steve |
