Hi All, I learned how to sail on Hobie Cats and have owned a 14, 16 and 18. I have also sailed a Hobie Wave at different resorts. I am now interested in the Getaway for it's ease of launching and family sailing. Are there any big differences between a 2020 and 2021? Hoping I might be able to get a 2020 (or possibly a 2019?) at a better deal than paying up for the 2021 as long as nothing drastic has changed between the years. Thanks! Neil |

Nope, don't think any changes between 20 and 21. Somewhere around 18 or 19 they went with the new "wave piercing bows" sort of shape that really is more efficient,by reports. Good, easy boats to sail. Loved my time on one and will get one in future. Chuck |

I'm also in the market for a new Getaway. My dealer has said that 2021 models will not be available until May because they are changing the mold to adjust wave-piercing bow. Apparently, there was some issue when they did the redesign in 2017. I was not told specifics details and do not know of any other changes, but I'm waiting until May so I can purchase a 2021 model with the improved bow. |

I'd wait were I you. The 2017 to 2020 models may have difficulty in finding parts down the road since the moulds are being retired. If you must have used to save money, I'd get something between 2011 and 2016 assuming you can find one (but used getaways are not easily found for sale). |

The hull shapes are different, but is the running gear any different? |

Just have to wait and see what they do. Running gear (sheets/halyards/furler/shrouds...) should all be the same. They will make changes to the hulls--might even make them from different plastic (Hobie uses a different plastic than other (more modern) rotomolded plastic boats-perhaps they are upgrading to this century. Be nice if they find their way to get rid of the comp tip and put on a taller all aluminum stick without the stupid float at the top. Would be cool if they offered a version for folks who don't want to provide free advertising--no graphics, all white sails with a reef point, taller mast all aluminum (or carbon) that cleated at the bottom of the mast-maybe with a spreader, plain gray or black trampolines and soft wings, self tacking jib.... |

Bow shape is returning to a traditional shape due to production problems with the mold. The mold was damaged beyond repair last fall. The new boats will be available in the Spring. |

What are the implications to those of us who have the discontinued bow shape? I guess we will never be able to get a replacement from Hobie? Are there any integrity issues or other concerns with the discontinued shape? Thanks, David |

Correct. The mold is not serviceable. Replacements would have to be pairs of the new shape. No know issues other than we were no longer able to mold them. |

Are they going back to the previous molds? So if I had an older getaway with a cracked hull could I get a new hull, or are they completely new molds? |

What a shame the new design is finished so soon, I've had my getaway since 2003 and was looking forwards to updating to the newer and probably faster model with reverse bows. Looks like I'll just keep replacing parts on my old boat and keep it forever. I did try to sell it once but just couldnt part with it.... Tasmania's only getaway sailor. 03/05 getaway Taipan 4.9 |

All new Molds. Spacing between crossbars might not be the same as older boats. That changes over production years as the molds distort. |

So basically the hull shape will be the original design? |

Matt - If all new molds had to be created, I am curious why Hobie went back to the old design. Wasn't the new hull shape supposed to be better? Thanks, David |
