What is the bungee cord on the front lower part of the mast for?

Clip the ends to the jib eyelets on the crossbar. It keeps the jib sheets from getting caught in the mast base.

It doesn't do much. Sailed lots without hooking it up and never had the lines get tangled. That sort of thing is more important with boat designs with jibs whose foot extends beyond the mast; but Getaway has a 100% jib. I'd have liked a self tacker except the boat needs to backwind the jib a little to help complete the tack more often than not.
