Post subject:  Add another broken composite mast to the list. :-(

While racing my '02 Hobie Getaway in the annual "Hardheads Regatta" put on by the Bolivar Yacht Club in Galveston, TX, my composite mast tip snapped and came crashing down. It took out the luff track with it. Conditions were choppy with 15mph winds FYI. I'm honestly not interested in replacing it with another comp tip and would much rather adapt a full aluminum mast from something else or have a full custom aluminum extrusion made. Anyone else done similar and have any information on getting it done?
Thanks for any and all help and feedback.

PS.... I know why boat manufacturers do the comp tip thing but, I'm not concerned since I sail the same places I have been sailing for 40 years and know the waters well.

There are at least a couple of threads where this has been discussed:

Comptip breakages: how many are happening?

getaway w/ hobie 16 mast

If you can find a used H16 mast (pre-comp tip), that's a good, economical way to go.

I'm the author of that second link. Been quite happy with aluminum mast for last year or so. Got a 2:1 halyard rigged (wire rope from head of sail up over the top of mast, attached to thimble, which I thread through my old getaway halyard. Both sides of the old getaway halyard is attached at base of mast, one to a cleat and one to a cam cleat. This allows me to easily raise and lower main sail under load while sailing, useful for reefing on the water...which is something I had added to my sail!

Good luck and let me know if you have any Qs!

Good to hear and thanks for the feedback. I'm still looking for a good used mast so if anyone knows of one in the center of the US, please pass along the details.

There are both a Getaway mast and a 16 mast on eBay right now. I didn’t notice the locations. On eBay, search “Hobiecat”

Look at the item Full Description. He’s some kind of parts dealer with locations all over.

I might have a full getaway mast that I would be willing to sell. I will take pictures of it tomorrow and can send them to you. I'm located just North of Chicago in Evanston. PM me and we can chat.

Anyone know exactly what size and material the rivets for the mast are? I'm about to cut and re-rivet my H16 mast to adapt it to the Getaway. Thanks in advance for any info.
