Post subject:  Getaway Mast broke
Hello all I was at the lake getting ready to put the boat in , and I thought I was clear of this Tree
Well I hit the tree and mast broke at the half part I didn't realize that these were 2 sections I thought it was a Comptip not sure how much of foam is in this mast.. what is the easiest fix here? Can I find the top section of a getaway mast , can I heat this part up to get the foam and stuff out of it, to buy just the top half?

A comp tip for the Getaway is about $1200, I think. And I'm not certain anyone has them available at the moment. Hobie has been going through some things the last few years.
Most people find a Hobie 16 aluminum mast and cut it down. I have a friend holding one for me that I'm going to convert over the winter, so if my comp tip breaks, I'll be ready to go.

Not sure if it’s much easier to find than a getaway tip, but a 17 comptip looks to be the same size as the getaway. The top hardware is differetn and would need to be swapped, but you may find a used one

I don't think it is. The 17 mast is about 2 or 3 feet longer, and I think more slender. At least that's how I remember them

Maybe the aluminum section is different, but I have a 17 comptip on my side yard sitting on my getaway next to the getaway mast, and the comptips look to be identical length

After swapping masts, I'm having problems with pitch poling.

I found a used H16 mast last summer. Conversion went well. I decided to leave the top alone and just cut the bottom to length, as others have done.

The first outing, it was trying to pitch pole. I thought "maybe I have the sail too high since there is extra length of mast up top." The next time, I painted some reference lines near the top of the mast and brought the sail down lower. I went out again, this time I raked the sail almost as far back as I could, with the forestay out to the second to last notch and the shroud lines on the second to lowest notches. I thought maybe this would help. Nope, got a good strong wind and she pitch poled in the blink of an eye. We scrambled over and righted her, but she kept going in the opposite direction and promptly turtled.

A couple of hours later after our little disaster was sorted, I went out again and kept a really close eye on this, and sure enough, I can't even fly a hull, because before my upwind hull gets in the air, there is way too much down force on the front of the downwind hull. The front gets driven into the water and the back of the downwind hull rides up out of the water, the boat plug will be up in the air when it should be buried under water.

Now what do I do? Do I need to bring the sail down very low and close to the tramp? I don't remember ever having to bring it down that low before.

Maybe without the flexibility of the comp tip, it's driving your hull down? I know my leeward hull has water spilling over the bow when I'm in big wind, and that's with a comp tip. Are you getting much sail twist with this mast? The top of my sail spills a lot of air

I haven't been watching the top that much. I will have to keep an eye on it. However, it will be hard for me to compare it since it's been over 2 years now since I sailed with the comp tip mast.

How are you securing the head of the sail at the top of the mast? I assume by your comment about lowering the sail slightly, that you’re just tieing off the halyard using the cleat at the bottom of the mast. If that’s the case, you’re never going to be able to get enough tension on the sail to flatten it out due to the haylard stretching. You need to secure the sail using the metal fork at the top of the mast and the slug on the haylard. This will allow you to tighten the downhaul to flatten the sail and hopefully reduce the tendency to pitchpole.

I did this mast swap several years back. I did it the same as you described, not cutting any off the top of the mast. I added a 6 inch cable at the head of the sail so that I can still use the hook at the top of the mast and have no tension in the main halyard. I didn't notice any more of a tendency for pitch poling after the mast swap.
