New Getaway - Sanity Check?

Post subject:  New Getaway - Sanity Check?
I've had my 16 for almost 20 years and used to participate in weekly club races and 2-3 regattas a year, but I haven't had time for that in a couple years. Nothing beats the thrill of the 16, but I feel guilty leaving the wife and kid at home while I go sailing by myself. We recently rented a Wave and was definitely kid friendly, but I felt a claustrophobic with the family piled on it.


I've never bought a brand new boat before, but I've been giving serious consideration to making a Getaway my first new boat. We've got a 2 year old and regularly babysit my sister-in-laws kids (4 and 8), so a Getaway with a motor mount seems like a great way to get more time on the water.

I haven't had a chance to sail a Getaway and probably won't until we have one, but here's my short list of questions:

[*]I'll still be able to go out by my self and get out on the trapeze, with a reduced chance of capsizing? I had to work pretty hard to fly a hull on the Wave, so I'm hoping the Getaway does a little better job of that with the extra sail area.

[*]I haven't had time to make my way to the nearest Hobie Dealer, but what comes standard on a Getaway these days and what are the upgrades?

[*] Thinking that if I buy the Cheata mount and a small outboard that we can putter around the lake and use the boat like a giant swim platform if there's not enough wind to move.

[*] I should be able to use the beach wheel from my 16 on a getaway, right?

[*] I haven't measured a Getaway, but I think I should be able to drop it on the trailer for my 16 without moving the rollers? Hoping I can just set the 16 on some wood blocks behind our shed and use the same trailer for both boats.

You should be able to trapeze and fly a hull on the Getaway, but its not going to have the same sporty feel of the 16. A bit more “tankish”.

Expect that you will need to adjust the rollers between the Getaway and the 16. The 16 rollers go out pretty wide because thekeel line is towards the outside of the hull, as compared to the keel line on the getaway being centered on the hull. Shouldn’t be a big deal to adjust, usually it’s one or two bolts to move the roller. Mark the position for each boat on the trailer crossbar using a Sharpie marker.

The Getaway is a great recreational vessel, as SRM said.
However....it will not have the performance or responsiveness of a H16, it was designed as a 'more comfortable family' boat.
Being a rotomoulded-built boat, maintenance is much less of an issue.

Check with the Hobie website, I am not sure if wings are included - those are worthwhile.
What you might like is to add a spinnaker (adapted from the Hobie 16 Spin).
My buddy Dave added one and did a nice write up on it.

Most folks remove the front trampoline, it encourages kids to move forward, which can upset boat trim.

You should also know that the Getaway weighs in around 400 lbs.....without a spin.

I figured we'll lose a bit of performance and gain a bit of weight, but it's worth it if I can get the entire family on the water more often. The Franken-16 weighed in closer to 350 the last time I checked it, so I doubt I'll notice the weight anyway.

I don't think the Wings are standard, but the Hobie website is a little vague on the standard equipment these days........

I have a Getaway and regularly sail with 5 guys with H-16s.
In light air, the 16s are faster. When the boats get up to 12-15 mph, it's pretty close; I'm faster than a couple of the guys and a couple of them are faster than me. Above 15 mph, we run neck and neck with me sitting on a wing and them trapped out.
Not sure that most people remove the front tramp, every one I've seen has it on. It's a great place for the kids to hang out. I move the kids back to the main tramp in high waves.
It's hard to fly a hull on it. I have to get off the wing and sheet in really hard. It lifts the windward hull up, but rarely very far.
Wings were optional, but almost everyone gets them. The spin kit is fun, I have that too. I have the trap wires, need to put them on one of these days.
Use double rollers or bunks instead of single rollers, or you'll dent the skeg.
Look for the thread on here for the KeithB motor mount. I had the Cheeta mount, then built the KeithB mount. Much superior.
The Getaway doesn't capsize or fly a hull nearly as easily as the 16. I always say that if the H16 is a Camaro, the Getaway is a Buick. Not as nimble, more comfortable, doesn't accelerate as fast, more stable in big winds.

Went sailing this last weekend, and had an interesting discussion with my guys. I have an all aluminum H16 mast to convert in case my comptip breaks. After talking to the guys, I'm going with a full on H-16 rig. Boomed H16 mainsail, battened jib, jib traveler. I should be able to keep up in the lighter wind better, and I expect I'll be faster in heavier winds. A hot rod Getaway!
