I don't know what else to call it. My port rudder frequently won't lock down because the cam gets out of position preventing the housing from engaging it. It's so counter-intuitive (for me) that I never remember how to get it back into position. I haven't been able to fix it underway. Does anyone know what I'm trying to describe? Thanks!

That is the rudder cam. Rotates down and locks. There are several ways to get a stuck cam "open".

First, make sure they are lubricated before you leave the beach. A dry cam is more difficult to fix on the water. You can use what ever is available right down to chap stick and suntan lotion. Best if lubricated with marine bearing grease that will not easily wash out.

1 - Large blade screw driver inserted in the open side of the cam. Twist to pop the cam up.

2 - Smaller blade screw driver worked in between the plunger and the cam till you push the plunger down enough to release.

3 - On the water I have resorted to using the mainsheet. I flip the tiller arm up and out of the way. Make a loop of line and hook the exposed cam and tug. You can also use a shorter line looped around the cam and the tiller arm for leverage... lift the tiller arm to pop it open.
