Everyone knows what they love but there are a couple things that bug me...and I know theyre nearly unavoidable. In light wind days when a powerboat passes you and the mast/sail flop all over the place...just really annoying! The cleats for the jib just arn't angled up enough it can be tough to cleat when sailing in high wind and you're pretty busy just trying to maintain control When I wake up in the morning and the wind is below 10kts

I've been wanting a Hobie cat since I was about 7 or 8 years old, I am 42 now. So I did alot of research and asked alot of question before I purchased my new Getaway. This is my first season and so far the only thing I dont like about this boat is putting it back on the trailer and leaving it at the marina. Thats it......for me this is the perfect boat! |

I am counting the seconds until the EZ mast stepper 111 is here. I have a bad hip and the mast grunt is just too much. |

This is my third Hobie after a 16 and a 21 Sport Cruiser. I like my Getaway a lot. I don't like that the jib leads are not adjustable. |

Ronstan makes wedge kits for 11' 22' or 33' increases at 11' per wedge. But you need to order longer bolts as you increase the angles. Don't try to bend the jib cleat bases, they will get over stressed. |

If you had to do it again, would you prefer the getaway or the 21 SC? I am trying to decide between the two in looking for a used one. Going to sail it on Mille Lacs mostly. The primary goal is to find somthing a little safer than my H16 for sailing with my small children. How would you compare the two? I find myself worried that I will be bored sailing a getaway, but really like the idea of no boom. (for the kids) |

I don't like the expensive motor mount that's available for the Gateway. I have to pass through a very tight channel and only need a small electric motor to push me through. Rowing is ok except when its really windy. |

If you want fast sailing, hanging in the trapeze harness and the other cool stuff associated with cats, well, the Getway is not the one. Well, you can do some trapezing if you have the right skipper. If you have lots of people to entertain on your boat, then yes, you need the Getaway, but otherwise try something else. Don't get me wrong, the Getaway is a great boat if... you need more than 2 people on the boat (or if you have kids) or if you would like to take it easy. I bought my Getway thinking that I need to acommodate my family (3 kids + wife) but it turned out they don't quite enjoy wet sailing (except for the little 3-years old who's the only one that touched a sheet). Now I'm a bit dissapointed in this slow cat. I am thinking about selling it but maybe I can still "convert" my kids. Recently I tried some Hobie 16 sailing on strong winds... that's quite a difference. That's exactly what I was expecting in a catamaran! |

I had a several 16's over many years and in the spring of 06 traded in my 16 on a new getaway. At first it was a disappointment compared to the 16 but over the summer the boat kind of won me over, yes its a little slower but way move comfortable to sail solo, You don't always have to be on your toes when the wind comes up, way easier to set up solo, and a big one for me is the 4 to 6 hrs of maintenance every spring on the fiberglass hulls. |

In light wind, the Getaway mast squeaks at the mount like crazy, ruining the tranquillity of the day. Any suggestions??? |

Option: Polish the inside of the mast cup and then use some grease on the ball before stepping the mast. Or just do the grease. |

I don't like the way the mast has to be raised. Side ways,..? Whats up with that? And I don't like the wing support arm design. It is neat how they fold, but the lower support arm mount location acts like a brake when you start to heal. So much for the waterline. I firmly believe I could blast past the 20 mph level they were not located on the waterline. My record so is 18.8 mph and that was with three on board, my son and his friend were hanging way out to keep her flat. Every time it healed enough to hit the the support arm it would feel like someone tapping on the brake of a car and making your body lunge forward a little. |
